Big Iron is a fully passive stereo processor built around a matched pair of Jensen transformers.
Audio transformers transfer signal through magnetic coupling rather than a direct electrical connection. In practice, this provides galvanic isolation and can help reduce certain ground-related noise problems while maintaining a balanced signal path.
Transformers are not perfectly invisible. Their behavior changes slightly with signal level, frequency, source impedance, and load impedance. At normal operating levels, the Jensen transformers used in Big Iron are designed for wide bandwidth and low distortion. When driven harder, they can introduce small amounts of harmonic distortion, phase shift, and frequency-dependent saturation.
These effects are generally subtle. Depending on the source and the surrounding equipment, they may be perceived as added density, smoother transients, stronger low-mid presence, or a more cohesive stereo image.
Big Iron contains no active amplification, digital processing, or external power supply. It is simply a carefully wired transformer stage intended for use on individual tracks, stereo buses, hardware loops, and mix or mastering chains.
